Dana White Speaks Out on B.J. Penn / Georges St. Pierre Situation

 |

Are you one of the many MMA fans who is eager to see a B.J. Penn / Georges St. Pierre "superfight"?
If so, then you should be cheering really hard for Georges St. Pierre when he takes on Jon Fitch at UFC 87.
According to Dana White, if St. Pierre "buzzsaws through Fitch", then B.J. vs G.S.P. will happen. If St. Pierre does dispatch of Fitch (which is easier said than done, considering that Fitch is the second-ranked welterweight in the world), then expect a Penn / St. Pierre fight at the end of 2008.
White has said that he has given his blessing to B.J. Penn jumping up to Welterweight to take on Georges St. Pierre. He was originally against the idea of having two title-holders fight each other, but apparently B.J. has convinced him that this is the right move. White obviously respects Penn a great deal, so he is giving B.J. what he wants (just as he did with Anderson "Spider" Silva.
Dana also went on to say that Penn agreed to drop back down to defend his lightweight title after a fight with St. Pierre. Apparently the winner of the Roger Huerta / Kenny Florian match will no longer be guaranteed a title shot against B.J. Penn.
The UFC has a number of potential big-money matches on the horizon, assuming that everything falls into place. First off, a "Rampage" / Griffin re-match appears likely to happen in 2008. If Griffin manages to beat Jackson once again, then look for a Liddell / Griffin match-up in early 2009, assuming that Liddell beats Evans at UFC 88.
If Georges St. Pierre beats Jon Fitch at UFC 87, then look for a B.J. Penn / Georges St. Pierre fight in December of 2008.
The UFC currently has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to potential big match-ups. Now is definitely a great time to be a fan of the UFC.
