Winner of Roger Huerta / Kenny Florian Fight "Likely" To Get Lightweight Title Shot

 |

Dana White, the president of the UFC, just recently spoke out on the current situation in the lightweight division in the UFC.
White said that the winner of the Roger Huerta / Kenny Florian fight at UFC 87 is "likely" to be the next in line for a shot at the lightweight title. The lightweight title will be up for grabs this Saturday, as B.J. Penn is set to defend against Sean "The Muscle Shark" Sherk in the main event of UFC 84.
This should come as no surprise to fans of the UFC lightweight division, as both Roger "El Matador" Huerta and Kenny "Kenflo" Florian have been hurtling up the ranks of the division. Huerta has amassed an unbelievable 20-1-1 record, with ten of his victories coming via knockout. His only loss came in 2004, when he was stopped in the first round in a fight against Ryan Schultz at Superbrawl 36. Since then, Huerta has a near-perfect record - his fight against Melvin Guillard at FFC 14 was declared a No Contest, but other than that, Huerta has won every fight since June of 2004. He has won all six of his UFC fights, including victories against Clay Guida, John Halverson and Alberto Crane.
Kenny Florian has actually fought for the lightweight title once before - he lost via unanimous decision against Sean "The Muscle Shark" Sherk at UFC 64 - Unstoppable. You know that Florian wants another shot at the title, especially considering that Sherk's victory was tainted (Sherk was later stripped of the lightweight title last year due to using steroids).
Florian has won his last four fights, including impressive victories over Joe Lauzon at UFC Fight Night 13 and Din Thomas at UFC Fight Night 11.
Both Florian and Huerta have compelling stories, and both fighters would give the lightweight titleholder at that time a tremendous fight. This is a win/win situation for the UFC. BJ Penn / Roger Huerta? Sean Sherk / Kenny Florian re-match? BJ Penn / Kenny Florian? Sean Sherk / Roger Huerta? Do you see any weak match-ups in there? Neither do I. The lightweight division is in good hands right now. Look for this match-up to take place somewhere around UFC 92 or 93.
